CDS-Ⅱ 2026 Elementary Mathematics: Top Weightage Chapters and Where to Start
Elementary Mathematics is the paper CDS candidates split over. Those who are strong in it treat it as their scoring engine. Those who are weak in it quietly dread it and hope to scrape through. Both groups make the same mistake, which is to treat the syllabus as a flat list of equal topics. It is not. A small number of chapters produce most of the marks, and once you can see that shape, the paper stops being a wall and becomes a ladder.
This guide lays out the CDS Maths chapters in priority order, from the ones that decide your score to the ones you can safely leave for last. It is written for two readers at once. If your Maths is strong, use it to make sure your hours land on the heaviest chapters. The Paper at a Glance
CDS Elementary Mathematics is 100 questions for 100 marks, with two hours to solve them, and it is written only by candidates for IMA, INA and AFA, not OTA. Every wrong answer costs one third of a mark, so accuracy matters as much as coverage. And there is a rule that shapes the whole strategy for a weak student: you must score at least 20 percent in this paper on its own, or you do not qualify, no matter how well you do in English and GK.
Hold those two numbers in mind. Twenty marks is your survival line. Everything above it is a bonus that lifts your aggregate. This guide gets you to the first, then past it.
The One Idea That Changes Everything
Here is the whole paper in a sentence. Arithmetic and Geometry together make up roughly half of it. Add Trigonometry and Mensuration and you are at about three quarters. Algebra and Statistics share what little is left.

Read that table once and your plan writes itself. You do not divide your time equally. You pour it into the top rows and let the bottom rows take whatever is left.
Tier One: The Chapters That Decide Your Score
Arithmetic is a third of the paper on its own. No other chapter comes close, and it is also the most repetitive block in the syllabus, which means past papers train you almost perfectly for it. But arithmetic is really a family of sub-topics, and they are not equal either. In rough order of how often they appear and how much they feed each other, prioritise:
- Percentages, because they power profit and loss, interest, and data interpretation. Master this one first and three other topics get easier.
- Profit, loss and discount.
- Time, speed and distance, including trains, boats and streams.
- Time and work, including pipes and cisterns.
- Ratio, proportion and averages.
- Simple and compound interest.
- Number system, LCM and HCF.
If you did nothing but make these seven reliable, you would already have a third of the paper in hand.
Geometry is the second pillar. It rewards a fixed set of theorems on lines and angles, triangles, and circles, learned cold and applied. There is little to understand deeply and a lot to simply know, which makes it dependable once you have put in the memorising.

Tier Two: The Formula Chapters That Pay Fast
Trigonometry and Mensuration are pure formula and practice. This is good news, especially if you are short on time. There is no deep theory to build. You learn the ratios, identities and heights and distances in trigonometry, you learn the area and volume formulas in mensuration, and then you drill questions until applying them is automatic. These two chapters give the highest return for the least conceptual effort in the whole paper, which is exactly why they come second, right after the heavy blocks.
Tier Three: Useful, But Last
Algebra covers linear and quadratic equations, polynomials and surds. It is steady but slightly smaller, so it earns third place. Statistics and data interpretation is small, around five to eight questions, but it is genuinely easy, mean, median, mode and reading graphs, so do not skip it. Read it in your last week for cheap, quick marks that most candidates leave on the table.
If Your Maths Is Weak, Start Here
This section is for the candidate who reads all of the above and still feels the paper is against them. You do not need to become a mathematician in a month. You need to clear your 20 percent line comfortably and then add whatever safe marks you can. Here is the honest, minimum effort path to do exactly that.
Begin with the easy, formula-light arithmetic. Percentages, averages, ratio and proportion, simple interest, and the basics of the number system. These need almost no theory, they appear constantly, and they are the friendliest questions in the paper. Getting these reliable alone can carry you close to, or past, your qualifying line.
Then add the two formula chapters, but only the standard questions. In mensuration, learn the everyday area and volume formulas, square, rectangle, triangle, circle, cube, cylinder, and practise the direct questions. In trigonometry, learn the basic ratios and the most common identities. You are not chasing the hardest questions here. You are collecting the straightforward ones, which are more common than the traps.
Add a handful of geometry basics. The angle rules, the properties of triangles, and simple circle facts. Even a partial grip on geometry adds several marks.
And use elimination everywhere. Because CDS has four options and one third negative marking, a blind guess averages to nothing, but the moment you can rule out two options, a guess becomes worth taking. A weak candidate who is disciplined about elimination scores meaningfully higher than one who either guesses wildly or leaves too much blank.
Do just this much, the easy arithmetic, the standard mensuration and trigonometry, a little geometry, and disciplined elimination, and you move from fearing this paper to safely clearing it. That is a realistic, reachable goal, and it is often all you need, because your real scoring can then come from English and GK while Maths simply holds the line.
The Traps That Cost Marks
- Chasing hard questions for pride. A tough algebra or geometry question is worth exactly the same one mark as an easy percentage question, and it costs you five times the time. Take the easy marks first, always.
- Ignoring negative marking. Every wild guess on a question you cannot narrow down is, on average, a wasted or losing bet. Guess only after you eliminate.
- Leaving Statistics unread. It is small and easy, and skipping it hands away marks you could have taken in minutes.
- Practising randomly. Solving mixed questions feels productive but teaches slowly. Finish one topic to fluency before moving to the next.
How to Turn This Into Marks
Reading a priority list does nothing on its own. The marks come from solving the actual questions behind it.
