Both groups make the same mistake, which is to treat the syllabus as a flat list of equal topics. It is not. The Paper at a Glance
NDA Mathematics is 120 questions for 300 marks, with 150 minutes to solve them. A correct answer earns 2.5 marks and a wrong one costs about 0.83, a third of the value, so accuracy matters as much as coverage. This paper is one half of the 900 mark written exam, sitting alongside the 600 mark General Ability Test.
There is a rule that shapes the whole strategy for a weak student. Differentiation, its standard methods and applications, and the basic rules of integration are the most common and the most learnable. The harder differential equations and area under the curve questions come later. Get the routine calculus reliable before you chase the difficult ones.

Tier Three: Small, But Some Are Free Marks

They are only about thirteen percent of the paper between them, but they are almost entirely mechanical. Once you know the procedure, the questions are close to automatic. This section is for the candidate who reads all of the above and still feels the paper is against them. NDA Maths is drawn from the Class 11 and 12 syllabus, so it is more conceptual than an arithmetic based paper, and that is exactly why a weak student needs a smart order rather than brute effort. You do not need to master everything. You need to clear your 75 mark line comfortably and then add whatever safe marks you can. Here is the honest, minimum effort path.
Begin with the mechanical chapters, because they need procedure, not insight. Matrices, Determinants and Vector Algebra are the friendliest in the paper. Learn the steps, practice the direct questions, and you collect marks without needing deep understanding. This is the fastest ground you will gain anywhere in NDA Maths.
Add the formula driven core. Basic Statistics, meaning mean, median, mode and variance, is genuinely easy. Straightforward Probability and Permutations and Combinations questions follow set formulas. In algebra, quadratic equations, complex numbers and sequences are largely procedural. In trigonometry, the basic ratios and common identities are enough for most questions. You are not chasing the hardest problems here. You are collecting the standard ones, which are far more common than the traps.
Take only the routine calculus. Learn basic differentiation and the simple rules of integration, and attempt those direct questions. Leave the hard differential equations alone for now. Even partial calculus adds several marks.
And use elimination everywhere. Because NDA has four options and one third negative marking, a blind guess averages to nothing, but the moment you can rule out two options, a guess becomes worth taking. A weak candidate who is disciplined about elimination scores meaningfully higher than one who either guesses wildly or leaves too much blank.
Do just this much, the mechanical chapters, the formula driven core, the routine calculus, and disciplined elimination, and you move from fearing this paper to safely clearing your 75 mark line. That is a realistic, reachable goal, and it is often all you need, because your bigger scoring can then come from the 600 mark GAT while Maths simply holds the line.
The Traps That Cost Marks
- Getting stuck on hard calculus or 3D early. A tough question is worth the same 2.5 marks as an easy determinant question, and it costs you many times the time. Take the easy marks first, always.
- Ignoring negative marking. Every wild guess on a question you cannot narrow down is, on average, a wasted or losing bet. Guess only after you eliminate.
- Skipping Matrices, Determinants and Vectors because they feel minor. They are the cheapest marks in the paper, and leaving them is handing away an easy nine to thirteen percent.
- Practicing randomly. Solving mixed questions feels productive but teaches slowly. Finish one topic to fluency before moving to the next.
